Holding Space
Land Acknowledgement
We are committed to listening to, supporting, and working with Indigenous communities and individuals. The land that we operate on is the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. This land is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between nations including the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee, and the Mississaugas of the Credit to share and protect the lands around the Great Lakes. Subsequent Indigenous Nations and peoples, Europeans and all newcomers have been invited into this treaty in the spirit of peace, friendship, and respect. This land is also covered by Treaty 13 and the Williams Treaties. It is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
Living Equity & Inclusion
We hold safe space, affirm, support and represent the expansive diversity of the world in which we live. Diversity, equity and inclusion, is the very fiber of our organisation – without which, we could not exist. We commit to discernment and analytically re-thinking systems and strategies to ensure continued learning and expansion in our changing world. We commit to maintaining a safe space for collaborations, innovation and progressive development.
We embody a culture of mutual respect, human dignity, equity and inclusivity as the norm. My endeavours will always lead the way in this regard.
Through ongoing consultations, programs and events, we allow evolution and growth to maintain our culture of safety, inclusivity, relevance and awareness.
We acknowledge the valuable inspiration and powerful lessons in the flawed landscapes of our world, and embrace transformative ideas and initiatives from our communities that have been underserved and underrepresented – which includes but is not limited to those of us who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, LGBQ2SI+, Female, Transgender, Gender Non-Conforming, Differently Abled. We believe in supporting, amplifying and empowering voices – rather than speaking on behalf of voices that already exist – to avoid misappropriation, misrepresentation and exploitation.
It is our mission to transform our world and render pledges like these entirely unnecessary and obsolete – as we witness the truth of our words in our actions alone.
Sustainability in Film
Inspired by Zaita Media, we make sustainability a priority in our production process in efforts to reduce the waste generated on sets. Digital copies of documents are the default, resources such as the Green Production Guide are referenced, and we strive to use reusable water bottles, mugs, cutlery, and dishes on our sets. Environmental consciousness and conservation are fundamental in today’s world, and no less so in film. Examples of green initiatives in film productions that can help shift current industry norms are:
- Reducing paper usage and using recycled paper: cast and crew opt-in to paper copies of documents; encourage going paperless and make charging stations and portable batteries available on set to facilitate going green.
- Reducing plastic waste: providing reusable dishware, cutlery, cups, mugs and bags to discourage using plastic alternatives, a ban on plastic water bottles and coffee pods, and avoiding plastic packaging and bags.
- Proper recycling practices: ensuring there are enough recycling bins on set and that recyclables are properly sorted.
- Reducing carbon emissions: organising shuttle services and encouraging carpools and sustainable means of transport. Holding video auditions rather than in-person.
- Reducing energy usage: turning off lights and equipment when not in use for extended periods, and using energy efficient and LED lights and reusable batteries.
- Mindful purchasing: avoiding plastic items and packaging, shopping at second hand stores (props, wardrobe) donating items after shooting, buying fair trade coffee.
- Planning for sustainability: from the start, cast and crew should be aware of the initiative to be green and sustainability is factored into each phase of production. A designated individual can oversee production to ensure policies are met and production assistants are trained on green initiatives.
- Promoting sustainability on screen: showing characters using reusable bags and beverage cups and avoid showing characters demonstrating wasteful practices on screen.
